Australia has announced that Beau Webster will make his Test debut in the New Year’s match against India at the Sydney Cricket Ground, stepping in to replace the struggling Mitchell Marsh in the playing XI. This decision comes as the only adjustment to the team that clinched a dominant 2-1 series lead in Melbourne. Marsh, who has battled poor form throughout the series, makes way for Webster, a Tasmanian all-rounder known for his impressive first-class record. Meanwhile, Mitchell Starc has been declared fit to play, despite managing rib soreness sustained during the intense Boxing Day Test in Melbourne, ensuring Australia’s bowling attack remains intact for the crucial encounter.
Marsh has struggled throughout the series, failing to reach double digits in his last five innings. He has bowled just 33 overs and, after experiencing soreness following the Perth Test, has also seen a noticeable drop in pace. “Mitchy obviously hasn’t quite got the runs, and perhaps wickets this series,” Cummins said ahead of the Test. “So we felt like it was time for a freshen up and Beau’s been great.”
“It’s a shame for Mitchy, because we know how much he brings to the team, but feel like now it’s a good week for Beau to get a chance.”
Tasmanian all-rounder Beau Webster has showcased extraordinary form in recent times, establishing himself as a standout performer in Australian domestic cricket. Since March 2022, Webster has maintained an impressive batting average of 57.1 in first-class cricket, coupled with his ability to claim 81 wickets at a solid bowling average of 31.7. His consistent performances highlight his versatility as a player who can contribute significantly with both bat and ball.
Notably, the 31-year-old achieved a milestone last year that had not been accomplished since the legendary Sir Garfield Sobers, becoming the first cricketer to amass over 900 runs and take 30 wickets in a single Sheffield Shield season—a testament to his all-around brilliance.
Ahead of this Test series, Webster continued to make his mark in the Australia A games against India A. In the first four-day match at Mackay, he played a composed and unbeaten half-century, showcasing his ability to deliver under pressure. He followed it up in the second game in Melbourne with two impressive three-wicket hauls, further cementing his reputation as a key all-rounder. His stellar performances have earned him a well-deserved call-up to the national team.
“Really excited for Beau; the first thing he [Marsh] said was ‘I can’t wait to see Beau go out there and give it a crack’,” Cummins said. “Particularly here in Australia, I think when a batter misses out or gets dropped, it’s always seen as a big thing. But the way that [Australia coach Andrew McDonald], and the selectors and myself look at is we love pulling a squad of players together who we can call on at different times.”
