Mohammed Shami has returned to the Indian cricket team for the upcoming five-match T20I series against England, starting on January 22. The veteran pacer has been out of action for the national side since the ODI World Cup 2023 final against Australia on November 19. Following that, he underwent ankle surgery and was sidelined due to injuries, including a knee issue that required further medical assessment, ruling him out of the India-Australia Test series.
In preparation for his comeback, Shami has been representing Bengal in domestic tournaments like the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the Vijay Hazare Trophy over the past couple of months.
The squad announcement by the BCCI also included a few notable surprises. Rishabh Pant was left out of the T20I series, with no official explanation provided. The wicketkeeping duties will be shared between Dhruv Jurel and Sanju Samson, while Suryakumar Yadav has been named captain for the series.
All-rounder Shivam Dube missed out on selection, but rising star Nitish Kumar Reddy earned a place in India’s T20I squad against England.
Joining Mohammed Shami in the pace department are Harshit Rana and Arshdeep Singh. The spin attack features Varun Chakaravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi, and Washington Sundar. Alongside captain Suryakumar Yadav, the batting unit includes stars like Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, and Rinku Singh.
Shami’s inclusion signals his importance in India’s plans for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy. After a disappointing performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the Indian cricket team will be eager to bounce back and contend for the ICC title. Shami’s experience and skill will undoubtedly strengthen the bowling attack and provide much-needed firepower.
The BCCI has reportedly sought an extension from the ICC for announcing India’s squad for the ICC Champions Trophy. Although the ICC permits teams to make adjustments to the provisional squad up to a month after its announcement, the BCCI appears to need additional time to finalize the lineup for the tournament, which will take place in Pakistan and the UAE.
Meanwhile, the squad for India’s T20I series against England has been announced and is as follows:
India will be looking to fine-tune their preparations against England in the lead-up to major international tournaments.
