Liverpool have made it clear they are not open to selling Trent Alexander-Arnold this month, but Real Madrid is still considering a potential second attempt to secure the defender during the January transfer window.
Real Madrid are reportedly considering a renewed attempt to sign Trent Alexander-Arnold this month.
The Spanish giants were swiftly rebuffed after their initial approach to Liverpool on Tuesday, as the Reds have made it clear they have no intention of selling the 26-year-old right-back during the January transfer window. Liverpool remains hopeful that Alexander-Arnold will extend his contract with the club.
Nevertheless, Real Madrid is now contemplating another move and is prepared to offer up to £20.7 million (€25 million) to secure a deal this month. Alexander-Arnold, whose current contract expires in the summer, is now eligible to sign a pre-contract agreement with overseas clubs.
Despite this, Liverpool has received no indication from the player that he wishes to leave, and negotiations with the defender and his family regarding a new deal are ongoing. With Dani Carvajal ruled out for the season, Real Madrid is eager to strengthen their right-back position and is keen to act quickly in securing Alexander-Arnold’s services.
But they are also wary of upsetting the player as their main aim is to sign him – either now or in the summer.
They don’t want to risk putting him off a move to Spain but are also showing how eager they are for his signature. Liverpool don’t want the player’s head to be turned in the middle of a huge season which sees them top of the Premier League and looking in fine form in Europe.
The Reds had two reasons to rebuff Real Madrid’s approach for Trent Alexander-Arnold. The first is that they are still hopeful the right-back will sign a new contract at Anfield so why would they entertain an offer with dialogue still open with the player.
But the second – and most important at the moment – reason is that they need him for the rest of the season. Conor Bradley may be a ready-made replacement if Alexander-Arnold does opt for Spain in the summer.
Under the guidance of Arne Slot, this Liverpool team is currently soaring, with the England international excelling at right-back, so there’s little chance the Reds would entertain a move that could disrupt their momentum. Some might argue that selling Alexander-Arnold could generate funds, especially if the player intends to leave at the end of his contract when it expires.
However, that remains uncertain. Even if he does decide to move on, what value would £20 million really hold for Liverpool this month? It wouldn’t be enough to secure a right-back of Alexander-Arnold’s caliber, that’s for sure.
But what is the true value of winning the Premier League or European Cup to the club? Beyond the financial rewards, which are substantial in both competitions, the prestige and long-term success these titles bring could far outweigh any immediate monetary gain from selling their star player.
Finishing higher in the league or advancing further in the Champions League brings in significant financial rewards, both in direct prize money and the increased revenue generated through merchandise, TV rights, advertising, and sponsorship deals.
However, from a purely sporting perspective, selling any key player now would be absurd, especially with Liverpool at the top of both the Premier League and Europe, while also progressing to the Carabao Cup semi-finals. The only justification for such a move would be to secure a transfer fee, but it would be an outrageous decision to destabilize the team for the sake of a few million pounds.
This is precisely why Liverpool firmly made their stance clear to Real Madrid: Trent Alexander-Arnold is not for sale. The club’s primary focus remains on winning this season and securing the player’s signature for a new contract. They remain hopeful that both objectives will come to fruition.
