Spanish Government Refutes Claims of Temporary Barcelona Registration for Dani Olmo

Dani Olmo’s registration with Barcelona reportedly expired on December 31, alongside midfielder Pau Victor, leaving the club in a challenging position as they navigate La Liga‘s stringent financial regulations.

Reports suggested that Barcelona had appealed to the sports branch of the Spanish government to address the situation, raising hopes of a temporary resolution. Claims emerged that a temporary registration for Olmo had been granted, allowing the RB Leipzig star to join his boyhood club despite the ongoing complications.

However, these reports have since been denied by government officials, who labeled them as “unsubstantiated.” The situation has intensified scrutiny over Barcelona’s handling of player registrations and their efforts to comply with La Liga’s salary cap requirements.

Barcelona continues to explore solutions, but with no formal agreement in place, the club remains under pressure to address the expiring registrations and strengthen their squad within the limits of financial fair play.

A spokesperson for the Spanish government has denied reports claiming that Barcelona midfielder Dani Olmo has been granted temporary registration.

Olmo, along with midfielder Pau Victor, saw his La Liga registration expire on December 31, falling afoul of a La Liga rule that prohibits players from being awarded a second license with the same club in a single season.

As Barcelona’s options began to dwindle, the club took its case to the Spanish government and the Higher Sports Council (CSD). Reports surfaced on Tuesday suggesting that they had been granted permission to temporarily re-register Olmo and Victor while their case is under review.

However, government spokesperson Pilar Alegria denied these claims, confirming that no temporary registration had been granted and the CSD had yet to make a decision.

“We are still studying it,” Alegria told RNE. “I have seen reports that suggest it’s a done deal, but that’s not the case. We are still reviewing the request sent by FC Barcelona.”

She explained that the process was complex and required input from both La Liga and the RFEF before a decision could be made. “We are also working with a 52-page request, along with over 60 attached documents, so it’s not a simple matter,” she added. “We will respond as soon as possible.”

Barcelona is hoping for a favorable outcome, which would allow Olmo and Victor to play in La Liga while the CSD deliberates. However, even if temporary registration is granted, Barcelona would need to win their case in court to keep Olmo and Victor registered for the remainder of the season, as any temporary registrations could be revoked if the case is unsuccessful.
