Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk made a brutally honest confession after his side were held to a 2-2 draw against Manchester United on Sunday. The Merseyside giants were forced to share the spoils in an entertaining Premier League clash at Anfield.

The Reds fell behind early in the second half when Lisandro Martinez blasted the ball into the roof of the net. However, they quickly equalized through Cody Gakpo just seven minutes later.

Mohamed Salah then gave Liverpool the lead with a well-taken penalty, but United responded through Amad Diallo, who leveled the score with just 10 minutes remaining. Liverpool were fortunate to escape with a point after Harry Maguire missed a clear-cut opportunity late in the match.

Van Dijk was asked to reflect on the game during an interview with Radio 5 Live after the final whistle, and the Dutchman didn’t hold back, admitting: “It could have been a lot worse if we are absolutely honest with ourselves.”

“They had a big chance in the end that could have been a lot worse than where we are now. I’m definitely disappointed with dropping points at home, but it is what it is and we have to move on – and we will.”

“We lost the ball too easily at times and then we were more open than we should have been. We’re not perfect, we’re still learning and we have to learn from this as well.”

The centre-back then insisted that Liverpool hadn’t underestimated the visitors ahead of kick-off, despite United enduring a challenging season on the pitch.

“That’s all the media,” he added. “Media talk. It’s nothing to do with us. We prepared for a very tough game like we have seen today. We didn’t think any of that.”

Sunday’s draw saw Liverpool move six points clear of Chelsea at the top of the Premier League table, with Arne Slot’s side securing 14 wins in their top-flight matches this season.

The north-west outfit now shifts focus to the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, where they will face Tottenham in a semi-final clash. Following that, the Reds will host Accrington in the FA Cup third round next Saturday.

Liverpool will return to Premier League action with a trip to Nottingham Forest next Tuesday, before traveling to Brentford just four days later.
